The epitome of a tropical paradise, this National Marine Park in the Gulf of Chiriquí encompasses two dozen islands and their surrounding waters. Established in 1994 to aid in the preservation of the region’s ecosystems, diverse flora and fauna, scientific conservation projects, and protect the many endangered inhabitants of the island while promoting ecotourism, this wildlife refuge is a naturalist’s dream come true.

Scuba and snorkel in the turquoise waters or engage in world-class sportfishing off any of the islands. Green iguanas, humpback whales (Julyto October), hammerhead sharks, dolphins and multiple species of sea turtle make their home between the white-sand beaches dotting the gulf. The covered forests house howler monkeys, leatherback and hawksbill turtles, and tiger-herons. Mangrove swamps and marine meadows add to clean and temperate air.

Traveling to this National Marine Park is easiest by boat from the small fishing village of Boca Chica. Visitors arrive to Boca Chica typically through David, most accessible by a one-hour flight from Panama City. Alternative ports along the Gulf also allow for scenic ventures to the islands and form a part of this nature and beach lover´s adventure.
